Department of Motor Vehicles

The Madison County Clerk’s Office provides motor vehicle services in accordance with Kentucky state law. Services include vehicle registration and renewal, title transfers, plates, and related transactions. The information below outlines available services, required documentation, and applicable fees to help customers prepare before visiting the office.

We can no longer accept any documentation that provides an individual's ITIN. ALTERNATIVES: Kentucky Driver's License Number, a Social Security Number, or Green Card (KRS 186.010 (13)). The only exception for this relates to Mobile Homes.

Step 1

Confirm Eligibility

To renew online, all conditions below must be met:
​

  • Registration is unexpired

  • Vehicle is not leased

  • No overdue property taxes on any vehicles owned

  • Vehicle is currently insured with a company registered with the Kentucky Department of Insurance

    • Insurance obtained within the last 45 days may not yet appear in the system

  • Vehicles registered in different counties must be renewed separately

Step 2

Gather Required Information

Have the following available before starting your online renewal:
 

  • Title number

  • Plate number

  • Debit or credit card (Visa, MasterCard, Discover, or American Express)

Step 3

Review Address

  • Review the address listed on your registration receipt

    • This must be your current address

  • Registration materials will be mailed to the address on file

  • Address changes must be updated with the County Clerk before renewing online

    • Contact the Richmond or Berea Branches to make an address update.​

Step 4

Pay & Receive Your Renewal

  • Pay online using Visa, MasterCard, Discover, or American Express

  • A $2.00 mailing fee per vehicle and a non-refundable online service fee apply

  • Allow at least 5 business days for processing and mailing

  • Online renewals are processed by the County Clerk after submission.
