Election Officers play an important role in assisting voters and helping the election process run smoothly. Applicants may choose to serve during Early Voting, on Election Day, or both.
Early Voting

Election Day
Tuesday, November 3
6:00 AM–6:00 PM

Election Day officers must arrive at their assigned voting location by 5:15 a.m. and remain until the polls close and required closing procedures are complete.
Election Officer Responsibilities
Election Officers work together to help each voting location operate properly and ensure voters receive courteous and accurate assistance.
Responsibilities may include:
Preparing the voting location before polls open
Assisting voters and confirming voter eligibility
Monitoring voting equipment and reporting malfunctions
Completing required election paperwork
Comparing vote totals with equipment records
Checking voting areas for prohibited electioneering materials
Helping enforce election laws at the polling location
Posting election results and completing closing procedures
Cleaning and securing the voting area before leaving
Election Officers are expected to follow applicable election laws and help ensure the election is conducted fairly and honestly.
Who Can Serve?
Election Officers requirements:
An Election Officer or alternate must be a qualified voter in the county in which he/she serves.
An Election Officer cannot have changed their party affiliation for one year before appointment, KRS 117.45 (9).
An Election Officer must be able to read and write in English.
An Election Officer must attend training sessions required by the Madison County Board of Elections before each Primary, General, or Special Election.
An Election Officer cannot be a candidate for office during the election.
An Election Officer cannot be the spouse, parent, brother, sister, or child of a candidate who is to be voted for on Election Day.
An Election Officer must be able to work from 5:15 am to 6:00 pm, or until the polls close. They must also be able to stand for extended periods and lift up to 25 pounds.
An Election Officer must have transportation to the training class and to their assigned polling location on Election Day.
How to Apply
All Election Officers must attend a required training class before the election.
Complete the online Election Officer Application and required W-9 form, and select your training date and time. During the application process, you may indicate whether you are available for Early Voting, Election Day, or both.
Previous Election Officers must complete a new application for the 2026 General Election.
