Register to Vote

Whether you’re registering to vote for the first time or updating your registration after a move, this page will walk you through what you need to know. Once registered, voters will receive a postcard in the mail with their precinct information.

First-Time Voters &
New Kentucky Residents

If you’re registering to vote for the first time or have moved to Kentucky from another state, you’ll need to complete a new Kentucky voter registration.

How to Register:

​

Eligible individuals can register to vote or update their voter registration information (address update, name change, party change) through the following methods:

  • Online at govote.ky.gov →

  • In-person at any of the following locations:

    • Madison County Clerk's Office

    • Driver's License Office

    • Armed Forces Recruitment Offices

    • K-TAP

    • Food Stamps

    • Medicaid 

    • WIC

    • State-funded offices serving those with disabilities

  • By Mail using:

    • Kentucky mail-in voter registration form

    • Federal Postcard Application *Applicable for military members, their spouse and dependent(s), or a citizen living overseas.

Please Note: If you were registered to vote in another state, your registration does not transfer to Kentucky. After registering here, contact the appropriate election office in your previous state to cancel your registration there.

Has Your Voter Information Changed?

If you’re already registered to vote in Kentucky, you can update your registration when your information changes. This includes a name change, a new address within Madison County, a move to Madison County from another Kentucky county, or a change to your party affiliation.

Important: You may change your political affiliation between the Primary and December 31st  to be eligible to vote in your new party's next Primary Election. If you change your affiliation between January 1st and the Primary Election date, you will only be able to vote in nonpartisan races in the Primary Election.

Voter Registration Qualifications

To register to vote in Madison County, KY, residents must meet the following qualifications:

​

  • U.S. Citizen and

  • a resident of Madison County, KY

  • at least 18 years of age on or before the date of the next General Election

  • not be a convicted felon; or if you have been convicted of a felony, your rights must have been restored by an executive pardon

  • must not have been judged mentally incompetent in a court of law

  • must not claim the right to vote anywhere outside of Kentucky

NOTE: Kentucky has closed party Primary Elections. This means that you must be registered either as a Democrat or a Republican to be eligible to vote in that party's Primary in May. 

​

If you choose to register with a political group or organization, or as an Independent, you cannot vote in the party primaries, but you may vote in all non-partisan primaries. These races include:

​

  • City Mayor

  • City Commissioners

  • City Councilman

  • School Board

  • Soil and Water Conservation, and

  • all Judicial Offices

Voting at 17

If you will turn 18 on or before the General Election, you may register to vote and vote in the Primary Election while you are still 17.

College Voters

While attending college, students may remain registered to vote at their permanent residence in their hometown or register using their school residence.

Students who choose to remain registered in their hometown may have several options for casting their ballot:

  • Request a mail-in absentee ballot

  • Vote in-person absentee

  • Vote during Early Voting

  • Vote on Election Day
