Become an Election Officer
If you are interested in becoming an Election Officer, you must fill out the Election Officer Application Form online before each election and select a date for your training class. If you don't have access to a computer, you may stop by the Richmond Office location and fill one out in person. Please review the job description and requirements before you apply.
This is a paid position. Election Day: $250. Early Voting: $16/hour.

Job Description
This is a paid position. Election Day: $250. Early Voting: $16/hour.

Arrive at your assigned location by 5:15 am so that you are able to open the polls at 6:00 am.

Be familiar with the election laws governing election day in the polling place

Monitor machines, compare the number of votes cast with the beginning tally, and fill out paperwork accordingly.

Ensure that only qualified voters enter the voting machine to cast their ballot.

Ensure that the election is conducted in the fairest and most honest manner possible.

Throughout the day, check the voting booth for electioneering materials (flyers/hats/pens).

Enforce election laws and maintain law and order at the polls within 300 feet of the entrance to the polling location.

Sign paperwork and post results at the polling place.

Call your County Board of Elections or County Clerk if a voting machine malfunctions.

Be courteous and helpful to voters.

Clean up your voting area before leaving the location.
YOU MUST ATTEND A 2-3-HOUR LONG TRAINING CLASS BEFORE EACH ELECTION TO SERVE AS AN ELECTION OFFICER.

Job Requirements

An Election Officer or alternate must be a qualified voter in the county in which he/she serves.

An Election Officer cannot have changed their party affiliation for one year prior to appointment, KRS 117.45 (9).

An Election Officer must be able to read and write in English.

An Election Officer must attend training sessions required by the Madison County Board of Elections before each Primary, General, or Special Election.

An Election Officer cannot be a candidate for office during the election.

An Election Officer cannot be the spouse, parent, brother, sister, or child of a candidate who is to be voted for on Election Day.

An Election Officer must be able to work from 5:15 am to 6:00 pm, or until the polls close. They must also be able to stand for long periods of time and lift up to 25 pounds.

An Election Officer must have transportation to the training class and to their assigned polling location on Election Day.
REGISTERED INDIVIDUALS WHO ARE 17 MAY SERVE IN THE PRIMARY ELECTION IF THEY WILL BE 18 ON OR BEFORE THE DATE OF THE GENERAL ELECTION.
Election Officer Roles
Each Election Officer has a specific role at the polls, but Election Day is a team effort. Clerks, Judges, Sheriffs, and Voting Guides work together to assist voters, follow required election procedures, and support the voting process from opening to closing.

The voting process starts here. Clerks check in voters, confirm their information and eligibility in the voter roster, and complete the required steps before a ballot can be issued.
Judge
Voter Assistance
Judges assist voters throughout the voting process and serve as bipartisan representatives at the polls.
Sheriff
Polling Place Conduct & Compliance
Sheriffs help maintain a fair and orderly polling place. They monitor activity in and around the polls, enforce electioneering restrictions, and address or report issues that could interfere with the voting process.

Voting Guide
A Polling Location Coordinator (PLC) will assist voters who have questions or need a little extra time at check-in. Whether confirming where someone is registered, navigating a name or address change, or contacting the Clerk’s Office for additional guidance, they help voters determine their next step.
